In 1895, Boston Philanthropist James Walker Tufts purchased 5,800 acres of ravaged timberland near the village of Pinehurst in Moore County, North Carolina, intended as a health retreat for middle-class Americans to recuperate from the ailments of the time. Golf came to Pinehurst three years after his resort first opened to the public. According to history, some hotel guests introduced the game in the dairy cattle grazing fields, hitting little white balls that disturbed the herd. Tufts then hired Dr. D. Leroy Culver of New York to design and build a golf course in Pinehurst, and in February of 1898 a rudimentary nine-hole course was constructed. In 1899, Pinehurst's first golf professional, John Dunn Tucker, was hired to add an additional nine, which later became Pinehurst No. 1, the first 18-hole layout. The Carolina hotel opened in 1901 as the center of activity at Pinehurst. Gracious accommodations included distinctive white rocking chairs which have lined its porches and verandas ever since. They have become as iconic to the historic resort as world-class golf.

Fourteen of the last 17 American Presidents who played or play golf are honored with the Pinehurst Presidential Rocker. Recalling the stately Presidential furniture of the past, the healthful rocking chair, made from native-grown North Carolina oak, is shaped, steam-bent and assembled true to the original Pinehurst Rockers. The secret of this chair's comfort lies in the shrewdly planned steam-bent curve of the back posts, which sweep in to give firm support to the sitter's back, and yet carry his weight down to the exact point on the rockers where they contact the floor. The chair is set low for comfortable elbow support and has wide armrests for perfect, restful balance. With a contoured seat and sturdy slotted back, this rocker is as comfortable as it is stylish. This piece is both weather-resistant and easy to clean, sure to be a favorite chair that you will be proud to own for a lifetime. Each rocker wears a plaque with the trademarked Pinehurst logo and the name "Pinehurst Presidential Rocker."
