Birdwatching Expedition in Central Park.
Birds flying up and down the Atlantic flyway inevitably encounter a huge patch of concrete, asphalt and brick. In the center they see a large patch of green, with plants and insects. That's why Central Park in New York City is one of the best birding spots in North America.

On a single day it is possible to see nearly 80 species. Warblers, flycatchers, swallows, orioles, sparrows and thrushes, as well as ruddy ducks, American black ducks, and Canadian geese, are all common visitors. Birds of prey, such as peregrine falcons, bald eagles, northern harriers, osprey, sharp-shinned hawks, Cooper's hawks, and red-tailed hawks are also frequently seen.

The 2 to 3 hour private expedition (for 1 to 4 people), led by New York City field ornithologist Starr Saphir, is centered at the 38-acre Ramble (mid-Park from 72nd to 81st Streets), a wooded area near the Great Lawn. These rich forests provide one of the easiest places in the Park to entirely jettison urban city views and experience one of the best spots in the Park for birdwatching. You will learn about the park and its wild inhabitants, identify species, study their behavior, and share in the experience of the timeless rhythms of nature. You will be invited to record your wildlife observations at the Central Park Boathouse.

About Starr Saphir
New York City's most notable field ornithologist and urban naturalist, Ms. Saphir has led bird walks in all parts of the U.S., in Central and South America, and in Africa. She teaches classes at the Audubon Society on bird observation skills and language that lead to an understanding of birds, their habitats and connection to nature. When not in Central Park pursuing her passion for wildlife, she serves on the Council of the Linnaean Society, dedicated to the study of nature and scientific culture.
