In its heyday, burlesque was a winking, naughty smorgasbord of sex and comedy, with dancers who created signature acts that defined their showbiz identities, like Lili St. Cyr's onstage bubble bath and Evangeline the Oyster Girl's halfshell routine. Well, hold on to your hats! Burlesque is big all over again. And, in the new burlesque, women are in on the fun.
Calling all would-be divas, harlots, dames, and hot mamas! (Sorry, boys, this one is for the girls only). If you have ever fantasized about being a showgirl, either on stage or in the bedroom, you can have fun while learning to enjoy freedom of expression, womanhood, and sensuality.
Offered is private instruction (for 1 to 4 participants) by Jo Weldon, star of the New York City burlesque scene and expert in the art of bump, grind, shimmy, and shake. She will provide the titillating tutoring you need to release your inner burlesque queen. In the private 1 1/2-hour experience, you will learn the feather boa walk, the tantalizing glove peel, and the devastating bump 'n grind inspired by 40s burlesque sensation Bambi Jones (tassle twirling is optional). Your instructor reconstructs, reproduces, and honors American burlesque traditions with lesson details at your discretion.
You've seen this elegant showgirl in Leonard Cohen's "Tower of Song" video with Bono and U2. She first stripped on stage in 1978 at the Rocky Horror Picture Show, then advanced to the level of feature dancer, booked to headline at strip clubs across the continent, always keeping the legendary ladies of burlesque in mind as she created her elaborately costumed and themed acts. She has studied the art of striptease for over two decades. In the 1990s she accompanied some of New York's most innovative performance artists into the national neo-burlesque scene, where she developed the outrageous, sexy, versatile persona of "Jo Boobs." She has performed at Tease-o-rama in San Francisco and Los Angeles and at each annual New York Burlesque Festival. She produces as well as performs, presenting the infamous "Hubba Hubba Hey! A Burlesque Salute to the Ramones" at the Bowery Poetry Club, and "Le Follies Fromage" at the legendary Coney Island "Burlesque at the Beach" Series. She lectures at NYU about the relationship between historical and modern burlesque.
