The clown "within you" succeeds by communicating its emotions and imagination without words, which makes it a universal and intercultural figure. In this exclusive private workshop, you will be introduced to the "art of clowning" and learn how this skill can be used not only by an aspiring clown or an actor working on his or her physicality, but by facilitators, trainers, speakers, presenters, and managers.
Your instructor, Dick Monday, was in charge of "clown development" for CBS's Circus of the Stars where he created characters and comic routines for Dick Clark, Lynn Redgrave, Jerry Van Dyke, Sherman Hemsley, and many more.
His one-on-one instruction will help to identify your comic persona, your own point of view, one that brings out the clown inside. Once you find your authentic clown, you will learn how to use it to access your creativity and artistic expression. The 2 to 3 hour experience begins with a series of warm-ups that deal with inhibitions. Creating a safe environment is essential for anything real to happen. It continues with improvisational games and exercises that help reveal what's inside. Then, by trusting in the uniqueness of yourself, you begin building a clown character through physicality and emotional adjustments. This is the start of extracting the truth about you from inside, and making it your clown character.
An extension of your character is developed through make-up and costume and hat choices. They don't cover you up, they help you to communicate your feelings and actions, to improve personal communication skills, non-verbally. Once you feel comfortable with who you are, your instructor will find routines and gags that will be fun and appropriate for the style of clowning that suits you best. If you have any skills from tumbling to singing, they will be incorporated into your persona.
The experience culminates by making a simple, non-threatening public appearance in a non-performance situation utilizing all that was learned, the character, the material, and the look.
As Director of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Clown College, Dick created and directed the clowning for the Greatest Show on Earth. He created "Slappy's Playhouse," a family theatre in Dallas, presenting European-style marionette shows, variety and magic shows. He currently writes and produces all the shows for that theatre, as well as shows for circuses, festivals and corporate events around the country. He continues to clown with partner Tiffany as the New York Goofs, a troupe of physical comedians devoted to preserving nearly forgotten performance skills. Dick's film and television credits include Into the Night with Rick Dees, Brain Donors, My Life, Love and Greed, The Late Show with David Letterman, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The Rosie O'Donnell Show, and Woody Allen's Sweet and Lowdown.
