Insider's Tour of the Chelsea Art District.
New York's Chelsea has its own rhythm, rules and style, making it a destination for anyone serious about art. Manhattan's first theater district sprang up here in the late 1800s, and about the same time the area attracted a row of song publishers and became the "Tin Pan Alley" of lore. Between 1900 and 1915, Chelsea streets housed America's first movie studios -- before Hollywood stole most of them away. The area's artsy traditions lingered on at the Chelsea Hotel (a residence for such writers as O. Henry and Tennessee Williams).

Nearly a decade ago, Manhattan's gallery scene, by far the largest in the world, began moving from SoHo to the far western reaches of Chelsea, by the Hudson River north of Greenwich Village. Art began to displace the neighborhood's body shops and taxi depots with galleries that span all mediums and subjects, from free-form paper-mache sculptures to Warhol's self-portraits to classic oil stills. The neighborhood makes a uniquely fascinating destination for an afternoon art stroll.

Spend two leisurely hours viewing New York's finest contemporary art in the hip, high-ceilinged galleries clustered in this wonderland of art. Viviane Silvera, an accomplished artist in her own right, will be your personal guide for an insider's experience in New York's art world. Explore emerging and established trends, discover up-and-coming artists, the world of art stars and dealers -- all from an insider's perspective. You will develop a nuanced understanding of contemporary art and enrich your own visual experience.

The private tour (for 2 to 4 persons) includes a visit to neighborhood favorite Wild Lily Tea Room for tea and cookies.
