A garden can help city dwellers by distracting from and even eliminating some of the unwanted elements of city life. An urban garden can transform even limited space from the mundane or ordinary to the sublime or profound. Urban gardening is, by its nature, intense gardening, because every inch counts.
Amber Freda, award-winning landscape designer, voted "Best in New York" in her profession, specializes in the design of terraces, roof gardens, courtyards, flowerbeds, vertical gardens, small water gardens, and automated drip irrigation systems. In a private consultation, she will discuss your creative vision and determine your particular needs. The experience begins with the premise that a landscape is more than just a collection of plants, but a potential work of art. Amber will work with you to make your garden an expression of who you are.
She will personally visit your home or office to evaluate light and soil conditions and to make suggestions for the types of plants that will do best. A practical, manageable landscape design plan (and one alternative, if requested) will be developed using a distinctive photo-montage style, which incorporates digital "before" and "after" photos. You will receive a realistic representation of what the garden will look like from this (much more realistic than a traditional sketch or line-drawing).
In addition, a complete list of each plant's cultural needs, maximum height and width, and notes on maintenance is provided. Recommendations will be made to match your taste and style, including custom planters, outdoor furniture, wood decking, masonry, electric/solar lighting, outdoor grills, arbors, pergolas, and an automated irrigation system that may reduce water usage in the garden by half. As a seasoned professional, Amber brings her knowledge, experience and skills to your space with custom designs that will optimize the beauty and value of your property.
Fueled by a passion for horticulture and an insatiable curiosity, Amber studied landscape design at the New York Botanical Garden. She has worked on many exciting projects, including the butterfly exhibit at the Museum of Natural History. She has designed, installed, and maintained gardens for celebrities ranging from Ann Richards to Robert De Niro, and hundreds of corporate clients, such as Pfizer, the NFL, Saatchi & Saatchi, NBC, Debevoise & Plimpton, and IBM. Recent projects include Park Avenue roof gardens, two 30-foot-tall vertical gardens for a hotel and residence in downtown Manhattan, courtyard gardens for an Art Deco co-op, entryway gardens in uptown Manhattan, water gardens, container gardens, atriums and indoor gardens, and drip irrigation systems. Amber writes gardening articles and teaches classes at the Brooklyn and New York Botanical Gardens.
