Juggling is a great way to win friends and influence people, pass the time, and relieve stress.
At the same time, have fun learning something you've always wanted to try, whether to satisfy your own curiosity or to show off to family and friends! With focus and the right teacher, anyone can learn the basics of juggling.
In this private 2-hour experience, you will be introduced to the art of juggling by Jen Slaw, a professional juggler and a patient teacher, whose experience ranges from teaching children with the Big Apple Circus to conducting advanced workshops for other professional performers. Jen will tailor your lesson to your own experience and skill level, but especially those with absolutely no juggling experience!
After a short physical warm up, the basic 3-ball juggling cascade will be taught, building up from 1 to 2 to 3 balls. For beginners, the majority of the workshop will be spent mastering this basic juggle and understanding what the body needs to do to make it happen.
Juggling scarves may be used to help illustrate the 3-object pattern at a slower speed. More advanced students can move on to a variety of 3 ball tricks and begin to understand how to add additional balls to their pattern. A variety of other props and techniques will be introduced, depending on your individual interest. These may include: clubs & club swinging, diabolo, devilstick, cigar boxes, plate spinning, and balancing. Techniques for effective practice will be discussed, as juggling is a skill that requires patience and practice.
Jen will also use music to explore how the rhythm of a beat can help with the rhythm of throwing & catching and aid in getting the body to relax and move freely. Once mastered, juggling encourages a mental and physical state known as "relaxed concentration"
in which the mind and body are able to be focused and alert while remaining calm and relaxed. A great break in the daily routine, juggling can allow you return to work or study feeling refreshed and more productive.
The process of learning to juggle, of looking at a pattern to see what isn't working and then figuring out how to fix it, can only improve your problem-solving skills. Transferring that information from your brain to your body is intense, sometimes frustrating exercise, but so delightfully satisfying when accomplished.
Participants will also receive a set of 3 professional juggling balls to take home for practice and show off purposes.
Performing since 1991 and the 2002 International Jugglers' Association Three Ball Champion, Jen has appeared around the world on Holland America Cruise Lines, and at a wide variety of festivals, theater shows, corporate & community events and private parties. Dancing since 1984, Jen seamlessly blends graceful movements with her juggling for a unique and engaging style. She has performed at famed NYC destinations and events including the Iridium Jazz Club, South Street Seaport, F.A.O. Schwarz, The Bindlestiff Family Cirkus, and Fashion Week. Jen has collaborated with World Champion Juggler Tony Duncan and with former members of Cirque du Soleil & Ringling Bros in The Love Show. She has taught families of all ages to juggle at various events & private parties. She has taught juggling to children with the Big Apple Circus "Beyond the Ring" program and she coaches The 3 of Clubs juggling troupe.
