There are no ordinary lives, each story is unique. Stories define the nature of our lives, and link us to our history and our future. Recording your story creates a reservoir for memories.
What memory do you want to preserve forever? The one about how you met your spouse on an airplane, or what happened when you went to the Grand Canyon, or how you grew up in the Louisiana bayou, or how your grandfather sold newspapers on the streets and ended up a millionaire, or how your pot roast got you that gold medal? Our lives are made up of stories, your stories and stories your parents or grandparents told you, stories of the past in rural America, or in Europe or Asia or Africa.
How wonderful it would be if those stories could be preserved for your family, friends or business associates, lest you forget them. What a special gift a recording of these stories would make. In a society where things are disposable, people are beginning to realize the value of preserving family history, celebrating friendships, and recording events and achievements. Imagine how listening to your life story in your own words may serve others in generations to come. Wisdom and values can be shared, honored, and celebrated through the medium of recorded oral history.
Noted author and personal historian Sally Steinberg will be your personal guide, making it easy and affordable to preserve your story. During a 1 to 2-hour private storytelling session in the comfort of your home, you, on your own or with another person or several people, will be invited and encouraged to share this experience. You will receive the completed recording on a master compact disc or tape cartridge.
Distinguished writer, journalist, personal historian, biographer, and professional interviewer, Ms. Steinberg is the author of The Book of Joy, the authorized biography of Joy Ungerleider, former director of the New York Jewish Museum. Her work includes narratives about the Nuremberg trials, about a relationship between two families, Japanese and American Jewish, promotional writing for artists, reports and website materials for international corporations, and a book, Houses, with the renowned designer Mariette Himes Gomez, for HarperCollins, 2007. Drawing from a family story of her own (Sally's grandfather, Adolph Levitt, invented the donut-making machine), she wrote The Donut Book, a Book-of-the-Month Club selection. Her materials form the National Donut Collection at the Smithsonian Museum, and she is the narrator for the documentary, "Donut Crazy," shown on the Travel Channel. Sally has written articles for The New Yorker, The New York Times, The Boston Globe, and many other publications.
