Outdoor Therapy Session in Central Park.
In the late 1800s, Sigmund Freud walked with some of his patients through the streets of Vienna. Inspired by the originator of psychoanalysis, New York therapist Clay Cockrell has taken his therapy beyond the couch and into the city's parks and onto the city's streets. His "outdoor psychotherapy" practice provides a new kind of mental health treatment that combines talk therapy with outdoor walking. Moving the body opens the mind.

Have you lost the balance of life? Is your life not what you imagined? Are you suffering with anxiety, depression, or the stress of city living? Are you not the person you hoped to be? Does the morning scare you? Are you struggling in your relationships or career?

Adding the dynamic of casual walking to the 50-minute talk-therapy session allows one to breathe a little deeper, bringing more oxygen to the brain and opening up the mind for deeper thought processes. The act of opening one's self up while walking through local parks and along quiet side streets creates an environment of possibility and change.

Most sessions take place in Central Park. Other popular routes are along the river, Battery Park, and Riverside Park. You may choose a route near your work or home, or along a quiet side street. There is nothing physically strenuous about the session. This is casual walking, not running or even fast walking.

About Clay Cockrell
Mr. Cockrell is a fully licensed and certified therapist who entered the field of clinical psychology after first earning a degree in clinical social work from the University of Kentucky. With over 15 years experience as a mental-health practitioner, Clay has developed an alternative method to traditional therapy called "outdoor psychotherapy." His innovative, focused and goal-oriented counseling has shown that moving the body opens the mind and that even casual walking helps diminish bad moods and relieve pain. He knows how important trust and communication are to the clients who swear by his treatment and he points to his track record of helping clients through the triumphs and tragedies, the wins and losses of Wall Street and the corporate world. His clients include business owners and entrepreneurs, artists and entertainers, and he understands the toll that a challenging profession can take on the mind—especially when one is not experiencing the desired level of success.
