Practice the Noble Art of Fencing.
Fencing evolved from the ancient art of the duel and mortal combat with swords to a competitive, individual sport of elegance and sophistication. A far cry from the swashbuckling epics of Errol Flynn, modern fencing involves grace, agility, and strategy. Physical chess, as fencing is commonly called, can help develop mental strength, quick thinking, decisiveness, self-esteem, and physical fitness.

The private, 2-hour experience is a total immersion into the romance and history of fencing, guided by fencing champion Ryan Shams. It begins at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, with a personal tour through the extraordinary collection of armor and weapons, symbols of power and glory. From there, you relocate to the fully-equipped, state-of-the-art training facility on the Upper West Side, where you are introduced to the modern descendants of the foil, rapier, saber, the basics of fencing technique, physical and mental discipline. An individualized workout includes conditioning, footwork, and bladework, then finishes with bouting practice.

About Ryan Shams
A three-year member of the United States Junior National Fencing Team, Ryan was ranked No. 1 in the United States in junior men's epee for two years. He is a junior Olympic champion and two-time junior national champion. Some of his other results include gold medals in several junior national tournaments, eighth place in the 1996 Junior World Championships in Tournai, Belgium, and 11th place in the 1995 Junior Worlds in Paris, France. His coaches were Egyptian Olympian Abdel Salem, a former U.S. Olympic coach who is now the head coach at the U.S. Air Force Academy, and Aladar Kogler, another former U.S. Olympic coach who is now coach at Columbia University. Ryan graduated from Columbia University in 1999, where he was on the All-Ivy and All-American teams and took the bronze medal in the NCAA Championships. He coaches at the New Amsterdam Fencing Academy.
