 | Three great qualities characterize the English tradition in fine furniture: steadfastness of purpose, uncommon design, and skilled workmanship.
In 1907, Frederick Ezekiel Hale, an English cabinetmaker, established a factory in Herkimer, New York, and by 1910 he began manufacture of glass-front, sectional bookcases, employing a design borrowed from the clever, practical bookcase sets in the offices of Victorian-era barristers in his native London.
To mark the 100th anniversary of the introduction of sectional bookcases to America, Hale craftspeople have re-created the company's original 1910 masterpiece. The exclusive "Victorian Edition" combines versatility and time-proven features with the ornate flourishes and styling of fine Victorian-era furniture. Skillful turnings and delicate mouldings echo the details of Hale bookcases built a hundred years ago.
A distinctive display for treasured books and collectibles, each section is crafted from solid hardwood (no veneer) and finished in the same durable lacquer applied to treasured heirlooms. Each section has an interlocking rail on top extending across the full width, an accommodating groove on the bottom, and a tongue extending upward in the back, all to assure sturdy, perfectly-aligned cases with no tools required for assembly. Each case is absolutely air tight and dust proof.
Barrister Bookcases will enrich your home or office with a mix of steadfast tradition and purposeful space-saving. The sectional Hale system can be started with one section, a crown and a base, and at reasonable cost, the capacity can be increased as your books accumulate. Build each section, in your own time and according to your own needs, to create a splendid library.
