When President Franklin D. Roosevelt changed the layout of the Oval Office, he added two high back chairs in front of the fireplace. The public sees this most often with the president seated on the left, and a visiting head of state on the right. This allowed President Roosevelt to be seated, with his guests at the same level, deemphasizing his inability to stand on his own accord.
The look of each administration's Oval Office evolves over time, and in 1980, President Reagan engaged the Kittinger Company of Buffalo, NY, to replace the Roosevelt chairs with two Martha Washington-style "lolling chairs," combining aspects of both Chippendale and Federal styles. Crafted of solid mahogany, each chair is distinguished by sculpturally-contoured, hand-scrolled arms and arm supports and claw-and-ball feet with elegant acanthus leaves on the knees.
Succeeding presidents continues to use these classic chairs, only changing the fabric to coordinate with their own decor. President George W. Bush at first had the chairs upholstered in shades of tan, sage, and melon. Media reports that referred to the new fabric's melon color as "pink" caused him to request a new fabric replacing the melon with a medium blue.
Widely known as one of the world's finest manufacturers of traditional American furniture, the Kittinger Company produces a limited number of the identical chairs, custom upholstered in a choice of fabrics, personalized to reflect your own unique style. (Measures 31"W x 30"D x 41 1/4"H).
