The Fireside Chat.

The moment was rich with historical importance: In the Oval Office, President Bush guided Russian President Putin to the straight-backed chairs beside the fireplace. The world's most powerful men settled into the nation's most prestigious seats in the spirit of good will.

When Americans needed a strong leader to reassure them during the worst economic slump in America's history, President Franklin Roosevelt, seated in front of the very same fireplace, spoke to the country in radio broadcasts. The speeches, which became known as "fireside chats," were shrewdly calculated to be homey, down-to-earth appeals to "the common man."

The world-renowned Fireside Chairs are hand-crafted by the venerable Kittinger Company of Buffalo, New York, manufacturers of fine furniture since 1866. These historic chairs offer comfort to occupants of the White House as they conduct the day-to-day business of the country, and to visiting Heads of State who call upon our Presidents. They are arguably the most photographed chairs in the world, since news organizations are allowed to interview and photograph at the conclusion of fireside meetings.

The mahogany Philadelphia arm chairs (circa 1740) feature hand-carved scroll arms and claw-and-ball feet with elegant acanthus leaves on the knees. Each President continues to use these classic chairs, only changing the fabric to coordinate with their own decor.
