The Truman Doctrine.

Living in the White House, the Trumans were a close-knit family who preferred not to entertain extensively or to hold grand state dinners. Bess Truman often returned home to Independence, Missouri, for extended periods, leaving the President alone in what he called "the great white jail, known as the White House," but it gave them both an incentive to correspond in lengthy and endearing letters.

President Truman's oval study on the second floor of the White House (as shown on May 19, 1948), is where the President wrote letters to his wife on an almost daily basis in letters containing warmth, gossip, humor, and insight on world events. As they had both grown up around the turn of the century, they preferred writing letters to making phone calls, and used notes to keep abreast of each other's lives as well as to remind each other of their affection.

Mr. Truman's taste in colors and decor went into the redecorating of the White House, and each commission was characterized by dignified simplicity. The Presidential study was appointed with the historic Resolute Desk and the Chelsea Swivel Chair, a high-back Queen Anne-style executive chair, designed for the President and hand-crafted for exceptional comfort by the artisans of Trinity Furniture.

The exquisitely-detailed Chelsea is built to the specifications of Harry Truman's personal chair by Trinity, the principal supplier of seating to Federal agencies such as the House of Representatives and the U.S. District Courts. Features include the strength of hardwoods and durable cherry finish, delicately-shaped, five-star wood base for stability, and pneumatic lift, allowing the height to be positioned correctly for the user. A choice of natural leather upholstery is accented by classic nail trim, and beautifully crafted gooseneck arms that add grace and traditional elegance to a chair built for a lifetime of use.
