The legendary Bank of England Chair or Courthouse Chair (sometimes called "The Old Lady"), an armchair with a particularly dignified relationship to the human form -- its elegantly curving rail and flat spindles fitting the contour of the back -- was associated not only with financial institutions but with courts and other formal places; Yale Law School ordered several in the early 1900s. When Yale graduate William Howard Taft defeated William Jennings Bryan to become the 27th President of the United States, the classic chair was mounted on a swivel base with casters and used by the President in the original Oval Office.
The tough but comfortably-contoured chair seated the physically heaviest American President ever elected. Interpreted by the craftsmen of the venerable Gunlocke Company in durable rock maple, this oh-so-civilized update includes pneumatic controls for the proper seat height adjustment, a five-star base for superior stability, and the finest natural leather upholstery for a degree of comfort never before attainable. Overall dimensions: 23 1/2"W, 22 3/4"D, 30" to 34"H.
Availability: Each William Howard Taft Oval Office Chair is individually hand-crafted to order at the Gunlocke workshop. Please allow 4 to 6 weeks for completion and delivery.
