The patriotic and idealistic young flyboy gained experience and wisdom during World War II. The youngest pilot in the Navy when he received his wings, George H. W. Bush flew 58 combat missions during the war. While several presidents have had aircraft carriers named in their honor, only the first President Bush knows what it's like to fight off of one.

Following Ronald Reagan into the Presidency, Bush asked Mark Hampton (the interior decorator whose relaxed traditionalism was embraced by America's stylish elite) to furnish his Oval Office. Hampton, whose use of upper-crust English antiques created a seductive atmosphere of low-key privilege, found a four-legged King George III armchair at the Olympia Antiques Fair in London and engaged the skilled artisans Smith & Watson to adapt its design for the President's executive chair of generous scale and comfort.

The George H. W. Bush Oval Office Chair, crafted by Smith & Watson to the specifications of the President's chair, frame is hand-carved in antiqued mahogany, super-reinforced with tempered-steel spring foundation, and upholstered in top-grain leather upholstery.
