If Katherine Hepburn Was a Building.
Katherine HepburnIn 1979, when asked in a “60 Minutes” interview with Morley Safer what it was like to be a legend, Katherine Hepburn replied that it was like being some grand old building you pass and look up to. And if she had to compare herself to a building, which one would it be? Hepburn responded without hesitation: “The Flatiron Building.”

It’s one of the most striking buildings of any era, any city. The Flatiron was the world's tallest building when it was constructed in 1902, and some New Yorkers worried that it would topple over at the notoriously windy corner. Designed by architect Daniel Burnham, the building derives its unique shape from the narrow sliver of land it occupies between Fifth Avenue and Broadway. A critic once compared it to a stingy piece of pie.

Although the Flatiron has long lost its status as New York’s highest building, it continues to attract unparalleled attention. Considered to be the most photographed architectural structure in New York City, the Flatiron was recently featured in the motion pictures “Spiderman” and “Spiderman 2” as the office of the Daily Bugle newspaper.
