The Caswell-Massey Store.

William Hunter, a Scottish-born doctor, founded what would become Caswell-Massey in 1752, the same year as Benjamin Franklin's shocking kite incident. This old-world apothecary has been brimming with traditional aromatic fragrances, grooming products, soaps and body essentials ever since.

In the early years, Caswell-Massey customers included George Washington, John Adams, Dolley Madison, and later to George Armstrong Custer, Annie Oakley, Sarah Bernhardt, and Edgar Allen Poe. From the flagship store on Manhattan's Lexington Avenue, Caswell-Massey has attracted musicians like Cole Porter and George Gershwin, and film stars John Barrymore, Errol Flynn, Judy Garland, Katharine Hepburn, Carole Lombard, and Greta Garbo. Lauren Bacall chose the Manhattan store for her first meeting with Humphrey Bogart prior to the filming of "To Have and Have Not" in 1945.
