Souvenirs for the End of the Century.

New York-based Boym Partners's "Buildings of Disaster" are miniatures of famous sites where tragic, historically-significant events took place, created to mark a special and uncertain moment of our human history.

These monuments enter the collective memory when tragic or terrible events take place inside or around their walls. They have been on display in three New York museums simultaneously: the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, and the American Craft Museum.

Among the owners of these limited-edition pieces are directors John Waters, the Coen brothers, Tracy Ullman, and Woody Allen; actor Kevin Spacey; producer Joel Silver; and architects Philip Johnson, Stanley Tigerman, and Alex Gorlin.

The eccentric artworks are individually cast of a heavy, specially formulated bonded nickel, adding to the drama with the weight and feel of solid metal. Each building is hand-finished and consecutively numbered. (The artist has limited production of each miniature to 500 pieces).

New Orleans Superdome.

Hurricane Katrina added a new chapter in the history of the Superdome, just as it changed everything throughout the Gulf Coast. In the aftermath of The Storm, in September 2005, 15,000 to 20,000 people took shelter in the Superdome, the city's shelter of last resort. Once a mighty testament to architecture and ingenuity, the Superdome was frequently cited as "a symbol of everything that went wrong in New Orleans."
