Memories of Morningside Heights.
At the forefront of American intellectual life for over 250 years, Columbia University is situated on Broadway in the Upper West Side neighborhood of Morningside Heights, a ten-minute subway ride from midtown Manhattan. A member of the Ivy League, a group of eight of the oldest and most distinguished universities in the United States.
Most of Columbia's graduate and undergraduate studies are conducted on Seth Low's late-19th century vision of a university campus where all disciplines could be taught in one location. The campus was designed along Beaux-Arts principles by acclaimed architects McKim, Mead, and White and is considered one of their best works.
Educated Subway Stop. The richly-colored ceramic replica of the Columbia University subway station at 116th Street has been faithfully depicted, with the look and feel of the original mosaic. This 1904 Grueby work features Columbia University’s seal, encircled by a wreath, the focal point of a heavily decorated panel situated high on the wall of the station. True colors are locked into the 1/4-inch tile substrate. Each decorative piece comes with a (removable) mounting hardware on the reverse. (Measures 6 x 8-inches).
