Taking It to the Streets.
We often do not consider certain mundane objects to be art simply because they are so familiar. If we were to step back and observe the craftsmanship involved in making these objects, art will be revealed. To most of us the lowly manhole is just something we drive or walk over, a circular doorway into a mysterious underground world. But to urban artist Paul Goguen, the manhole becomes his canvas, as he captures an overlooked piece of public art.

You could call him the “Manhole Man.” His work is a convergence of metallurgy, history, and art displayed onto the canvas. While most cities across America simply have utilitarian discs of iron covering their subterranean stink-tunnels, the iconic designs of New York manhole covers assert the city’s individual presence, right down to the streets.

Hardcore Hardware.
This work is developed from an imprint of an actual, full-size manhole cover, a common element of infrastructure found on city streets throughout the city. Each powerful piece is an acrylic painting on canvas stretched over a wooden 32" x 34" frame, wired and ready to hang. (The site of the cover is carefully chosen to yield the best print. No two covers are exactly the same even if they are produced at the same site so each work is truly an original).

Iron Icon.
It is believed that the “BOR” in this cover stands for Boro, as in the Borough of Manhattan. The "N" at the end of Manhattan works both ways and completes "BOR" into "BORN" thus giving us "Manhattan Born.” This work is developed from an imprint of an actual, full-size manhole cover from the Lower East Side of Manhattan near the Williamsburg Bridge. Each powerful piece is an acrylic painting on canvas stretched over a wooden 32" x 34" frame, wired and ready to hang. (The site of the cover is carefully chosen to yield the best print. No two covers are exactly the same even if they are produced at the same site so each work is truly an original).
