The Carnegie Deli, the great temple of New York Jewish gastronomy, was opened in 1937 adjacent to Carnegie Hall. USA Today has called the restaurant the "most famous" deli in the United States. Carnegie Deli was the favorite hangout of comedian Henny Youngman, and Adam Sandler included a reference to the deli in "The Chanukah Song." The walls of the deli are nearly completely covered with autographed pictures of celebrities who have eaten there. Menu items have been named after famous patrons, including a corned beef and pastrami sandwich named after Woody Allen after the deli served as a filming location for "Broadway Danny Rose." When you go, keep in mind what Richard Shepard, correspondent for the New York Times, said about Jewish food: "When you eat it, 72 hours later you're hungry again."
Authentic Taste of New York Jewish Culture.
In New York we take eating seriously. Corned beef at the Carnegie is the genuine article, the knish is delish, and the dense and creamy cheesecake is to die for. The Gargantuan Deli Combo includes 2.5 pounds of Carnegie Deli Corned Beef (fully-cooked), jar of Carnegie Deli mustard, 2 potato knishes, and (save room for dessert), an individual 4-inch famous Carnegie Deli cheesecake. A Jewish "Care Package" filled with deli essentials for displaced New Yorkers.
