Opened in 1931 and named after Scottish essayist Thomas Carlyle, the hotel has featured a number of well-known jazz performers (notably Bobby Short, a fixture there from 1968 to 2004) and Woody Allen and his jazz band have been playing weekly at the Café Carlyle since 1996.
