Harry's New York Bar in Paris dates back to the 19th century. It's called "New York" because it really was a bar in New York that the original owner had dismantled and shipped to Paris a little over a hundred years ago. The "Harry" was added later, when Harry MacElhone bought it in 1923.

This venerable watering hole has a singular, one might even say historic distinction: back in the 1920s a bartender here mixed Worcestershire sauce with tabasco, salt and pepper, fresh lemon juice, vodka, tomato juice, and voila! Harry's is where the Bloody Mary was born, and originally served in this glass. What is beyond question is that the feeling of the glass in your hand, its weight and shape, is part of the experience of enjoying the drink.

One more thing. Together with the journalist O.O. McEntyre, MacElhone organized a group called the International Bar Flies, an organization for serious drinkers with its own secret handshake and a necktie featuring a fly on a lump of sugar. Included with the Set of 2 Original Bloody Mary Glasses are the official "Rules of the I.B.F." (International Bar Flies).
