Patience and Fortitude, the world-renowned pair of marble lions that stand proudly before the majestic Beaux-Arts building at Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street in Manhattan, have captured the imagination and affection of New Yorkers and visitors from all over the world since the Library was dedicated on May 23, 1911. Called “New York’s most lovable public sculpture” by architecture critic Paul Goldberger, the Lions have witnessed countless parades and been adorned with holly wreaths during the winter holidays and magnificent floral wreaths in springtime. They have been bedecked in top hats, graduation caps, Mets and Yankee caps, and more. They have been photographed alongside countless tourists, caricatured in cartoons, and illustrated in numerous children’s books.
To celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the opening ceremony of the New York Public Library, presided over by President William Howard Taft, a special set of the iconic lions has been crafted into bronze for a splendid set of bookends, utilizing the centuries-old lost wax method, a process by which a bronze is cast from the artist's original sculpture. The exquisite pieces were then affixed to stunning burl wood-finished bases. Offering the "100th Anniversary Edition" Library Lions Bookends, standing 7-inches tall; each base measures 7.25-inches x 3-inches with a non-skid pad to protect furniture. Each bookend weights 4.5 pounds.
