The green-and-white-checked tablecloths were jammed so close together that the waiters could hardly squeeze between, and patrons found themselves knocking knees with their dinner companions. Conversations turned into an excited murmur as the sandy-haired man in an open-necked white shirt and corduroy trousers sauntered in, opened a tattered case and removed, then hooked together, the sections of an antique clarinet. Peering through his familiar black-rimmed glasses, he would hop up onto the bandstand, then snap his fingers to start the music.
Michael's Pub was an East Side institution where Woody Allen played clarinet with his Dixieland band every Monday night for 25 years. Woody even skipped the 1978 Academy Awards, where he won an Oscar for Annie Hall, in order to play his regular gig at Michael's.
Offering an authentic artifact, swiped from a table of the legendary club.
