The Peninsula Hotel Ashtray

$95.00

The Peninsula Hotel was originally built in 1905 as the Gotham Hotel, designed in the neo-classical style. It went into bankruptcy in 1908 partly because it could not acquire a liquor license as it was too close to the Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church and also as it was overshadowed by more luxurious hotels like the Plaza Hotel just a few blocks north and the St. Regis just across the street from the Gotham. The Hotel was bought in 1988 by the Peninsula Hotel Group of Hong Kong.

On July 26, 1938, John William Warde leaped feet first from a window ledge of the seventeenth floor of the Gotham, crashing into the glass marquee of the 55th Street entrance of the Gotham, ending a fourteen-hour drama that kept three hundred New York City Police Department officers at bay. When he jumped, ten thousand people were gathered at the busy intersection of 55th Street and Fifth Avenue. Collectively they shouted, "Here he comes!" prior to becoming silent at the moment Warde hit the sidewalk.

Offering an ashtray from the iconic Peninsula, now out of use along with cigarettes, but desirable for its connection to New York City culture.
