Postcards from the Edge.
Travelers have been sending picture postcards since such mementos were invented in the late 19th century, as a way to share -- or brag about -- places they visited. Postcards document the experience of a place, existing in and out of time.

These personal mementos from the past capture views of New York City in a visual feast of warm colors and wit, as they open windows into another time. Displayed in handsome desktop shadowboxes, reframing a new birth, simple postcards are transformed into new forms with a unique set of aesthetic and artistic values. Together the preserved images become artifacts of notable importance. (Each collectible shadowbox measures 7 x 10 x 2-inches overall).

Crossroads of the World.
Originally called Longacre Square, this New York landmark became Times Square after the opening of the Times Tower. And the rest is history. Located in the heart of the theater district and the center of New York nightlife, Times Square has, over the years, attracted people from all walks of life, from brewery workers to stage actors, from the poorest of transients to the cream of New York society.

If Fred Astaire Was a Nut.
Like many immigrants, Amedeo Obici made the arduous passage from Italy to America, started a business, and prospered. The company he founded, Planter's Peanuts, continues to thrive. Obici introduced the dapper Mr. Peanut in 1916, dressed in top hat, monocle, white gloves, spats, and a cane. He went on to become an advertising superstar. In 1942, the iconic Mr. Peanut billboard first appeared in New York's Times Square.

When the Toll Was 50-Cents.
By the early 1920's, ferries across the Hudson River, the only mode of travel between New York City and New Jersey, strained to handle more than 20,000 vehicles a day, so officials decided to build an automobile tunnel under the Hudson River. The first non-official vehicle to pass through the Holland Tunnel was a delivery truck transporting a shipment of merchandise to a Bloomingdales.

Sunday in the Park with George.
Central Park was the first landscaped public park in the United States. Advocates who admired the public grounds of London and Paris urged that New York create a comparable facility to establish its international reputation. Beginning in 1853, Central Park became New York's most massive public works project, employing some 20,000 workers to reshape the site's topography to create the pastoral landscape.

A Night at the Plaza.
The Plaza Hotel, one of New York city's finest hotels, was architecturally designed imitating the style of a late medieval French chateaux. When The Plaza opened in 1907, it was used primarily as a residence for wealthy New Yorkers such as Alfred Vanderbilt. The famous flocked to its doors. Ernest Hemingway once counseled F. Scott Fitzgerald that he should leave his liver to Princeton and his heart to The Plaza.

Although boxing was Madison Square Garden's original claim, it's now more famous as home to the New York Knicks and New York Rangers. It has hosted political conventions, the circus, and concerts by Elvis Presley and John Lennon. President John F. Kennedy's 45th birthday celebration took place at the Garden on May 19, 1962. During it, Marilyn Monroe sung her now infamous "Happy Birthday, Mr. President."

The Statue of Liberty is one of the most recognizable icons of the United States, a gift of the French government to the United States to honor the ideals of freedom and independence. It was a very early gesture of national generosity. The copper-clad statue became a symbol of hope and freedom for many hundreds of millions of people who immigrated to the United States during the 20th century to find a new life of peace and prosperity.

Today it is one of the most extensive public transportation systems in the world, with 468 passenger stations and 842 miles of track. Meeting Place of the World.
Relic of a New York institution in a bygone era. The story is told that after Jack Dempsey's restaurant was forced to shut down in 1974, no one ever discovered the identity of the landlord who evicted the boxer-turned-restaurateur in favor of a fast-food place. However, persuasive rumors persist that the building was owned by Great Britain's royal family.

Some Ball Yard.
Yankee Stadium opened on April 18, 1923, when John Philip Sousa and the Seventh Regiment Marching Band led the Yankees out onto the field and Governor Alfred E. Smith threw out the first pitch. More than 74,000 fans crowded into the stadium that day to see the Yankees beat the Red Sox 4–1. Baseball legend Babe Ruth is said to have stepped up to the plate that day, taken one long look at New York's massive new stadium, and simply uttered "Some ball yard!" Nostalgic postcard images from the history of Yankee Stadium create a conversation piece, encased in a shadowbox keepsake frame. You can almost hear the roar of the crowd in the background.
