Robert Indiana's LOVE Sculpture, a dramatic pop art piece on Sixth Avenue at 55th Street in mid-town Manhattan, might be the second most photographed icon in the city (after the Statue of Liberty). A couple poses after asking a stranger to take a photo that includes both lovers in front of the famous sculpture. The scene repeats itself all day long, every day of the year.
Robert Indiana, an American Pop artist known for his scuptural poems, is best known for his LOVE sculpture with the tilted "O." Conceived in a time when America was consumed by the Vietnam War, LOVE became a symbol for Peace. The famous sculpture is one of the most celebrated works within the pop art movement as well the art world as a whole. The 12-foot New York sculpture was completed in 1970 and installed in 1971. Huge crowds turned out in New York to see the sculpture erected and a great cheer rose as the tilted "O" was lowered into place.
