Rare Artifact of New York City Glamour and Sophistication.

A nightclub perched atop a New York skyscraper opened its doors in October 1934. In attendance was Cole Porter, whose songs were played by Barry Winton’s Orchestra.  The circular motif, designed in part by stage and film director Vincente Minnelli, was dramatized by stepped terraces with round crystal balustrades and punctuated by French crystal chandeliers. Advertised as “a dining and dancing rendezvous without parallel in the history of the New York entertainment world,” the sky-high venue became a magnet for the city’s upper crust and their middle-class pretenders.  It was here that New York socialites rubbed elbows with A-list movie stars like Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, Gloria Swanson, Douglas Fairbanks Jr., Jeanette McDonald, and Jean Harlow. The big bands of Benny Goodman, Guy Lombardo, Duke Ellington, and Woody Herman played, and two-story tall windows provided a stunning view of New York’s shimmering night skyline.
